Blanche Killingsworth is a longtime North Lawndale community member.

It’s so important youth know what healthy eating is. You can’t point a finger at me and say I’m not doing good at eating right when I don’t know what right is.

Memories
When I think back, I remember watching the transition of this property, the gardeners coming in, youth learning gardening, cooking, how to eat healthy. Some residents believed Windy City Harvest would bring food and a positive attitude to the community. Some were leery of new people coming in.

Lifelong Connections
I recently had a birthday party in the neighborhood, and a lot of Chicago Botanic Garden people showed up. That meant so much to me. And Lord, when I saw Ketaurah—I remember when she was a little kid. I said, “Hey, look at you!” She said, “I’m still with the Garden!” When you get people to come back, it says a lot about what you put into them.

Continuity
There are youth in North Lawndale that are interested in food. They want to know, why did my grandmother try to put a garden in her backyard? Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s, homeowners had little gardens in their backyard. The North Lawndale Greening Committee has been around for more than 25 years. They brought tradition with them from the South. You all are, in a sense, continuing it.

 Hace poco celebré una fiesta de cumpleaños en el vecindario y acudió mucha gente del Chicago Botanic Garden (Jardín Botánico de Chicago). Eso significó mucho para mí. Y cuando vi a Ketaurah, Dios mío, me acordé de cuando ella era pequeña. Le dije: “¡Mírate!” Ella dijo: “¡Todavía estoy en el Jardín!” Cuando se consigue que la gente regrese, dice mucho de la atención que se les presta.

Continuidad

En North Lawndale, hay jóvenes interesados en la alimentación. Quieren saber por qué mi abuela intentó poner un jardín en su patio trasero. En los años 60 y 70, los propietarios tenían pequeños jardines en su patio trasero. El Comité Ecológico de North Lawndale existe desde hace más de 25 años. Trajeron la tradición consigo desde el sur. En cierto sentido, ustedes la continúan.
