Malbec Imperial Bromeliad

As mountain natives in Brazil, these bromeliad plants are remarkably tough and well adapted to their environment. Over time they accumulate moss and plant debris around their root systems, creating a nurturing microclimate that allows them to put forth flower stalks that can reach over 10' tall. They can stay in bloom for 5 months. However, tough as it is, it can't take our Chicago winters. To grow it here put it in a container that you can bring indoors before frost.

'Malbec' is particularly distinctive for the very deep maroon color of its mature foliage, while younger foliage offers a dramatic combination of light green with maroon.
