Culver's Root

Believed to be named after an American physician, Culver’s root (Veronicastrum virginicum) is a tall upright perennial native to East and Central North America. The narrow, toothed leaves grow in whorls of 3-7 around the stem. Numerous tiny tubular florets grow in a central spike, with smaller spikes sprouting around it at its base. The flowers vary from pristine white to pink or pale purple. Easy to grow, it prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. A good background plant in the perennial bed, it is attractive to butterflies. It is often used to bring height to a mixed border where its dark green leaves and height make a definite statement.
