Shrubby Whitevein

Sanchezia speciosa combines large, glossy leaves with veins prominently outlined in white with spikes of brilliant yellow flowers with red bracts in winter on a sparsely branched shrub. Full sun to partial shade and an evenly moist, moderately fertile soil are required to produce the best flower production. Native to Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru, it is interesting to note that some of the hummingbirds native to the Chicago area migrate each year to northern South America for the winter. It should be no surprise to bird watchers that a number of flowering plants with red-and-yellow tubular flowers can be found along their migration route.
