Peruvian Slipper Orchid

Multiple, up to 6" across, pinkish red lady slipper orchid flowers on tall flowering stalks rise above green foliage that matures about 18" in height. This exciting new species was discovered in Peru, well beyond the typical range for this genus fairly recently. In cultivation it requires cooler temperatures, reliably moist potting medium and strong sunlight for no more than 4-6 hours per day. This plant is a hybrid because it is illegal to possess the straight species outside of Peru. Hybrids like this one are being produced to reduce the illegal collection pressures on the diminishing wild species populations.
