Parrotiopsis

Parrotiopsis jacquemontiana is monotypic - meaning it is the only species in this genus belonging to the Hamamelidaceae (witch hazel family). Native to cold regions of the western Himalaya's it can reach the size of a small tree or large shrub in cultivation. In late winter/early spring silver dollar sized white bracts surround the bottlebrush like mass of white stamens. The flowers are scattered along the stems and are best appreciated if a dark background is provided. Semi-shaded light levels with consistently moist soils are preferred. Gardeners in the Chicago region will want to provide winter protection for newly planted specimens until they get a few years of age.
