Las Vegas Trumpet Daffodil

This plant is a Narcissus, named for a beautiful young hunter in Greek mythology who fell in love with his reflection. It is a spring-flowering bulb, and when flowering is over, you can see the strappy green leaves that provide nutrients for next year's flowers.

Las Vegas daffodil (Narcissus 'Las Vegas') is a trumpet-style daffodil with ivory-white petals surrounding the vivid golden trumpet; it was introduced in 1981. The up-facing flowers come into bloom in early spring and will grow to 20 inches in height. Daffodils prefer a position in full sun and are tolerant of the heavier soils found in many Chicago-area gardens. As with other members of the Amaryllidaceae (amaryllis family), the sap contains compounds that repel deer, rabbits, and other herbivores. Cut flowers will last a week or more indoors, but avoid getting the sap on exposed skin, as it can cause allergic dermatitis in sensitive individuals.
