Sweet Caroline Light Green Sweet Potato

Ornamental sweet potato vines are used as a colorful foliage accents in summer flower beds and containers. This cultivar has large, three-lobed, maple-like lime green leaves. It grows into a mound and spreads out to 24 inches or more. It can take bright sun or partial shade and loves summer heat. Sweet potato vines have really taken off in popularity in recent years due to the efforts of University of Georgia horticulture professor Alan Armitage, who noticed that sweet potato farmers in the Southeast were rogueing out plants with mutated leaf colors because these plants do not produce good quality tubers. He became interested in their uses as ornamental plants and contacted gardeners and growers looking for colorful castoffs. The first introductions were 'Margarita' and 'Blackie'.
