Gerolds Spurge

Gerolds spurge is a critically endangered plant in its native Madagascar where it only grows in a small area of coastal forest with sandy soils. However this plant is a popular commercial nursery plant because of its appealing flowers and ease of maintenance. This plant can grow to be twelve feet tall but more typically it reaches three feet tall and two feet wide. It has dark green leaves and unusual red flowers that appear to be circular but are actually two overlapping red petals with yellow centers.

This spurge is thornless, but like most spurges it has caustic sap so care should be taken when pruning or cutting the stems. It prefers sandy dryish soils which should definitely be allowed to dry out between watering and mostly sunny conditions. This plant is not hardly in Chicago but can be overwintered successfully in a sunny spot.
