Ohio Buckeye

This tree is a cultivar of the native and can reach a height of 60 feet. Its common names are the Ohio Buckeye, American Buckeye or fetid buckeye. In spring, it blooms with panicles of creamy yellow flowers. The foliage emerges with coppery highlights before maturing to green. In the fall, the leaves turn a bright red. The fruits contain tannic acid which is poisonous to humans as are the leaves. It is hardy to Zone 4 and prefers moist, well-drained soil.
