'Maynard's Gold' has small gold flowers densely clustered together in flat-topped flower heads. It blooms from late spring until mid summer on stems that stand 8 to 10 inches high above fuzzy greenish gray foliage. It is attractive to butterflies, bees and hummingbirds while resistant to deer, rabbits and drought. 'Maynard's Gold' is a cultivar of Achillea tomentosa which is native to southern Europe. The genus name Achillea is in reference to Achilles, hero of the Trojan Wars in Greek mythology, who used the plant medicinally to stop bleeding and to heal the wounds of his soldiers.
