Sir Peter R. Crane FRS is a British botanist, evolutionary biologist, and museum/science institution leader. He is known for landmark contributions to understanding the origin and early evolution of flowering plants, and for directing several of the world’s major botanical and natural history institutions. Sir Peter Crane is celebrated for transforming major scientific institutions such as Kew and the Field Museum; advancing global plant conservation efforts; and bridging paleobotany, systematics, conservation, and public engagement in science. His influence spans museum leadership, academic research, and the global botanical community.

  • He pioneered detailed studies that link fossil plant structures to living plant groups, helping to reconstruct early flowering‑plant lineages.
