Peter H. Merlin was a legal professional and civic leader who played a key role in Chicago’s horticultural community. He practiced law with the Chicago firm Gardner, Carton & Douglas and served as president of the Board of the Chicago Horticultural Society, the governing body of the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Merlin was born in Grabs, Switzerland, and grew up in Liechtenstein, where he became a great outdoorsman, a passion he continued throughout his life. When he became involved with the Chicago Horticultural Society, and especially during his
tenure on the Board from 1970 to 1979, Merlin helped guide the strategic direction of the Garden, supporting its mission of plant conservation, education, and public engagement. His leadership contributed to the Garden’s growth as a center for horticultural excellence, research, and community outreach.

Merlin’s administrative and legal expertise played a vital role in supporting horticultural initiatives and expanding the Garden’s reach and resources. At Gardner, Carton & Douglas, he served as chairman of the management committee from 1980 to 1989.

Merlin was a founding director, president, and chairman of the German-American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago. He also served on the boards of Benton House, Lake Forest Country Day School, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and the Coleman Lake Club, where he served as president. He was also an active member of the Chicago Council of Foreign Relations.
