Hubert A. Fischer was a distinguished horticulturist and hybridizer, renowned for his work with irises and daylilies. Based in Hinsdale, Illinois, Fischer left a lasting legacy in the horticultural world through his innovations, leadership, and dedication to his craft. Fischer and his wife Marie created celebrated show gardens, first in Lombard and later on a 14-acre estate in Hinsdale, featuring tulips, daffodils, poppies, peonies, irises, hemerocallis, hostas, and more.

Career highlights:

  • Charter Member of the American Iris Society (AIS) beginning in 1920; President of AIS from 1963 to 1966
  • Founder of the Chicagoland Daylily Society
  • Past President of the American Hemerocallis Society
  • Active member of the Chicago Horticultural Society, Men’s Garden Club of America, and Northern Illinois Iris Society
  • Known for hybridizing irises (DuPage, Truth, Meadow Snow, Star Sapphire, Evening) and daylilies (Oriental Ruby, Green Valley, Red Spinel, Thumbelina)
  • Traveled extensively to study and promote horticulture in England, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Japan, Russia, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Tahiti, India, Nepal, and China
