Superintendent and Landscape Architect, Morton Arboretum
Originally from Thorp, Wisconsin, Tyznik studied Landscape Architecture at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and began his career with the Milwaukee Park District. He moved to Illinois and joined the Morton Arboretum in 1953, where he gained renown in his field and remained as a respected landscape architect and garden design expert until 1993.
Career highlights:
- Contributed to many garden designs and exhibits during his time at the Morton Arboretum, including entries for the Chicago World Flower and Garden Shows.
- Designed notable gardens such as Ann Carton’s garden in Lake Forest (now part of the Smithsonian archives), as well as gardens for Faith Lutheran Church in Glen Ellyn, Central DuPage Hospital, and Brenton Arboretum in Iowa.
- Tyznik was also a botanical illustrator, working in media such as pen and ink, watercolor, charcoal, and pastel; his artwork was featured in exhibitions at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation and reproduced in the Morton Arboretum Quarterly.
- After retiring, he helped launch a landscape design division at his son’s nursery, Planter’s Palette, in Winfield, Illinois.
- Tyznik was honored as a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
