Burgundy Candles Meadow Sage

'Burgundy Candles' is a 2007 introduction, which produces numerous spikes of small, tubular flowers that have burgundy buds and bracts, opening into violet-blue flowers, giving them a two-tone effect. It was the result of open pollination of the cultivar 'Carradonna'. Meadow sages are highly recommended for perennial gardens in northern climates. They are fully hardy and produce bushy little plants with aromatic, wrinkly gray-green leaves. The flowers attract butterflies but the foliage is not liked by deer or rabbits. They need little care once established, but require full sun for the best blooms. The meadow sages were derived mostly from the Eurasian species Salvia nemorosa and Salvia pratensis. There are more than 900 species of Salvia, native to Eurasia, the Americas, and Africa.
