African Queen Trumpet Lily

Lilium ‘African Queen’ has flowers that may vary considerably in color from yellow-apricot to burnt-orange brown. Because of this significant variation in color, African Queen is often sold as African Queen Group. The flowers are trumpet shaped, fragrant, and quite large, measuring 6 to 8 inches long. The stems grow 3 to 6 feet tall and bloom in late spring to early summer. African Queen belongs to a group of Trumpet/Aurelian hybrids which generally bloom after Asiatic lilies and before Oriental Lilies. They are the least shade tolerant of the lilies. The unsurpassed grace and beauty of this lily makes it a lovely addition to the garden. Lilies love full sun, but will do well in partial shade. They tolerate hot summer days, as long as the bulbs are deep enough to remain cool. Lower plants surrounding the lilies will help protect their roots from drying out. Lilies make an excellent cut flower with long-lasting blooms and buds that continue to mature and open after cutting.
