Cowslip Primrose
Dainty, pendulant yellow primroses in clusters appear in May above the mounded, crinkled leaves of this hardy perennial from Eurasia. Plant in moisture-retentive, moderately fertile soil, in full to partially shaded locations where the clump will slowly increase in size over time.
This species has been a favorite of herbalists and gardeners from the age of Pliny the Elder up to today. The leaves, flowers, and roots contain a number of bioactive compounds; the leaves are used in spring salads in parts of southern Europe.
