The Departure

10 illuminated dolphins skim the surface of the water. Catching a glimpse of a wild dolphin pod is always an exhilarating experience and people often feel closely connected to these animals. While this can be an enchanting experience, looking closer the beautiful glow of the dolphins’ surface has a slightly dappled or marbled appearance due to the amount of digested plastic waste it has ‘consumed’, drawing attention to the problems caused by plastic waste.

uxu Illusion Hole

Illusion Hole

The No. 6 artwork of the ‘Use Your Illusion’ series. Since UxU studio began to create this series of artworks using meteor lights, they always have been curious how the visitor experiences the flowing light. According to UxU, light is not a substance, but can be transformed to certain things to produce meaning. Through the geometrically arranged pattern, it seems that the water formed by light is flowing into to an unknown black hole. When we watch the flowing light, do we really care about the existence of the river underneath? Or, do we treat the false as true, through which the real becomes false?

UXU Studio
Founded in 2011 by Kuan-Hung Chen and Ying-Chu Chen, is a Taiwanese collective of architects, designers, and artists. Their experimental, multidisciplinary approach leads to surprising (light)objects, which are often made of simple and ordinary materials. Sometimes, this results in big installations to wander in or just to quietly sit in. Other times, they enlarge or reduce a recognizable thing or image to a surrealistic size.

Light a Wish Light A Wish

Light A Wish

Make a wish before you blow the fluff from a dandelion into the air—everyone knows this game. OGE Group’s Light a Wish visualises the moment the seeds ispelrse in the air, taking your wish with them into the world. The enlarged, fuzzy seeds—of which there are 10 in total and measure 2 metres in height – dangle carefully in the air and glow in a way that makes it look as though they are breathing. With Light a Wish the artists visualise the good intentions that we quietly release and (hopefully) encounter again in the future. In this way the illuminated dandelion puffballs are carriers of our deepest desires and dreams. In the old days, blowing dandelion seeds into the air was also done as a superstitious act: the number of seeds that remained signified the number of years you had to wait to get married, how many children you would have with your loved one, or how many years you still had to live. But before we can take a look in the future, we have to wait a little longer for spring.

OGE Group

OGE Group has designed several light artworks that aim to evoke an emotion from the viewer in a playful way, sometimes through an interaction of sorts and other times by recalling memories and experiences.

singularitySingularity

Singularity

Singularity is built within an 8m diameter geodesic full dome. In mathematics and physics a singularity is a point of extreme variability where normal rules no longer apply, where change, transition, unpredictability and the unknown become the norm, where our models of behavior break down and our expectations are confounded. Singularities exist at the limits of our understanding – from distant and abstract phenomena such as the beginning of the universe and black holes through to the more familiar and every-day, for example weather patterns. Singularity represents a hypothetical technological singularity, an imagined point in time at which technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unforeseeable changes to human civilization.
