Honey Flower

The honey bush is a small shrub that is a native of South Africa and India but has been naturalized in many other places including the US due to its attractive appearance and reliability. The honey bush has footlong blue-green serrated leaves that are very tropical and almost palm-like in appearance. The flower spike appear above the foliage and are are a dark reddish maroon color. The leaves are said to have a salty peanut butter aroma and the flowers a honey scent. Peanut butter and honey in one plant! Sadly all parts of this plant are poisonous to both humans and animals.

The honey bush is hardy to 20 degree Fahrenheit and will cope better with winter temperature if heavily mulched to protect the roots. It prefers a warm sunny spot with moderate to dryish soil conditions.
