The paniculata species of phlox are the most magnificent and there is a huge selection to choose from. Plant 'John Fanick' in full sun in fertile moist soil where it will grow to 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide and produce striking, bicolor lavender and pink flowers from July to August. Phlox is not always an easy plant to grow but this perennial has slightly waxy leaves that hold powdery mildew at bay, and the plant stands up well to heat, humidity, or drought. It attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
