Pendulous Cape Cowslip
Glowing spikes of bright reddish tubular flowers (and flower stalks) appear apparently overnight on this distant hyacinth relative from South Africa. Sunbirds - the equivalent of American hummingbirds - find the flowers irresistible. This is a plant that requires a distinct dormancy in order for the bulbs to prosper and flower. After flowering and as the leaves begin to yellow, withhold water. Bulbs can be left in the original pot or redivided. This is another species that produces many 'daughter' bulbs if the growing conditions are ideal.
