These are sparsely branched tree-like succulents. Columnar stems and deciduous leaves are reddish green in full sun. New leaves are first produced horizontally above the spines and then vertically above the spine, indicating each year’s growth. Numerous white to dull red flowers are borne on the upper stem with cymes spreading and short stems.
