Sweet Acacia
Acacia farnesiana is a deciduous shrub native to Mexico, Central America, and naturalized in Australia that grows to a maximum height of 29 feet. It thrives under full sun and dry moisture conditions. From fall through early spring, it produces yellow flowers that attract butterflies. This nonhardy plant is mostly used as a containerized specimen in Chicago and as a focal point in arid landscape or pruned informally to make a hedge.
