Christmas Cactus
Satiny pink flowers are typical of the Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera truncata), but cultivars can be obtained in a wide range of warm colors. This epiphyte is native to the coastal jungles of Brazil, and requires partial shade, warm humid air, and a moisture-retentive potting mix. The short days of September trigger flower bud production, with flowering beginning during the Thanksgiving season and lasting through winter. Avoid moving the plants once flower buds are set to keep the buds from dropping off. This cactus has been popular as a houseplant since 1800.
