Sonny Ramaswamy is an agricultural scientist, educator, and higher education leader. His career spans over four decades of leadership across land‑grant universities, federal science agencies, and higher education accreditation. He is regarded as a national leader in agricultural research and food‑system innovation; a champion of scientific advancement and public engagement; and an influential voice for higher education quality, access, and accountability. Appointed by President Barack Obama on May 7, 2012, Ramaswamy led one of the nation’s most influential agricultural research agencies as director of the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. He has authored more than 150 scientific publications, a book, and holds a patent.
