Siberian Burnet

From August to September, this late-blooming hardy perennial produces deep wine-colored flowers shaped like catkins or bottlebrushes at the tips of tall wand-like stems. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and moist soil conditions. It is supposedly deer-resistant, and butterflies are attracted to the flowers. Even before they bloom, the leaves grow in very attractive mounds of pinnate leaves with narrow, glossy, deeply toothed leaflets. A member of the rose family, this perennial is native to Russia, Japan, and northern China.
