Coconut Palm

Cocos nucifera is the scientific name of the coconut palm. Its origin may be the islands of the Pacific or Indian Ocean, but it has become widespread in tropical areas. Coconut trees can grow up to 80 feet tall and they start by sprouting from the deepest of the three holes in the de-husked fruit. Everyone knows what coconut palms look like: tall gray trunks topped with fronds up to 15 feet long, with clusters of fruit tucked under them. The coconut fruit, botanically a “drupe”, is one of the largest seeds in the world. Coconut milk is obtained by grating the white meat of the fruit. Other coconut products include coconut water, coconut oil and copra. Coco fibers from the husk are called “coir” and used to make mats. Nutritionally coconuts are very high in saturated fat and fiber, with moderate amounts of protein, iron, magnesium and vitamin C.
