The pineapple guava is native to the highland areas of South America as it needs the combination of cooler temperatures and intense sunshine to produce its sweet fruit. The unusual flowers have edible pink and white petals with a dense cluster of red stamens with yellow tips. The leaves are green with silvery undersides. The tree grows to about fifteen feet tall and wide and is widely planted in South America as a domestic garden fruit tree. The fruits are used for making drinks, jellies and alcoholic beverages.
