Krehbiel Gallery, Regenstein Center
Horticulturist: Jason Toth
What’s behind the design:
I wanted to create something sculptural to exemplify a pattern from nature—in this case, the spiral seen on the new growth of ferns. Oversized "fiddleheads" are included with massive ferns to create a display that’s lush and verdant. The fiddleheads are covered in plant material like moss and small ferns as an organic sculptural installation. The Krehbiel Gallery is conducive to this kind of display since it offers a sheltered indoor setting and filtered light from the skylight.
Personally, I have always been fascinated by spirals as an example of nature's efficiency; they are also cool/whimsical/weird.
Plants used:
A wide variety of ferns!
If you were to decorate a room in your home in this pattern…which room would you choose and why?
I would choose a powder room for a spiral pattern, preferably covering every inch of vertical space with wallpaper. I would want it to be dizzying and entrancing, go big or go home!
