Kalm St. Johnswort

Growing only 2 to 3 feet tall,Hypericum kalmianum has a nice mounded habit and attractive bluish-green leaves. It's a fine-textured plant for the shrub border or for use in a foundation planting. Extremely showy, 1 to 1-1/2 inch, bright-yellow flowers cover the plant in July; the center of each flower has golden-yellow stamens. In winter, interest is provided by the picturesque gnarled branches, which are covered with colorful reddish peeling bark. This shrub's native habitat is from the Lake Michigan dunes to the prairies, making it a hardy plant tolerant of many situations. It is a nice small shrub for the home landscape.
