Patterned by Nature – Scalloped Vista

Plant Conservation Science Center
Horticulturist: Jamie Berlin

What’s behind the design:
Jason Toth (exhibits horticulturist) and I were looking at my containers and discussing what would work well, and scallops popped into Jason’s head. It seemed like a great spot to showcase them—at the entrance to the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Plant Conservation Science Center and a stop on the tram route. We wanted shorter plants so it’s easy to make out the pattern, whether you’re on the tram or right next to the containers.

Plants used:
Angelonia angustifolia 'Balarckle’
Cosmos sulphureus ‘Cosmic Orange’
Isolepis cernua ‘Live Wire’

If you were to decorate a room in your home in this pattern…which room would you choose and why?
I would use the scallop pattern as the tile in my bathroom, going for a mermaid theme. Something fun, beautiful, and iridescent.
