The last time the 13-year and 17-year cicada broods both emerged at the same time was more than 200 years ago in 1803. Luckily, you will be able to witness this rare phenomenon again in 2024! What better way to prepare than by learning about unique features of these cicadas, the fascinating myths surrounding this wonder bug, and what this year’s emergence means for the future. Local cicada expert John Thompson will help you understand cicada behavior, including the sounds they make, their dietary habits, and their predators. You will learn how to identify cicadas, investigate their anatomy and physiology, and explore their life cycle in Illinois. The class will be held indoors, and cicada specimens will be available to examine.
