The program continues to develop and evaluate new perennial plants for introduction to the horticulture industry and gardeners. 2016 is proving to be an exciting year for the program, with eight new false indigo (Baptisia) hybrids and two new Phlox hybrids poised for introduction. Three more Phlox hybrids and a compact speedwell (Veronica) are being distributed this year to licensed nurseries around the country for evaluation and propagation. Be watching for these new introductions in 2017 or 2018! As many as 20 additional perennial selections may be distributed to the licensed nurseries over the next five years. On the woody plant front, our partners at The Morton Arboretum are actively selecting new trees and shrubs from their extensive woody plant collections for potential introduction, as well as developing trees and shrubs that will be better adapted to the challenges of urban environments and to stressors such as changing climate and plant pests and diseases. Several new potential tree introductions are now undergoing trials with key licensed growers. Stay tuned!
