Ornamental Plant Research
The program evaluates herbaceous and woody plants in comparative trials, ultimately recommending the top performers to gardeners and the horticulture industry. A new trial of sneezeweeds (Helenium spp.) began in 2017, which features 39 species and cultivars that will be evaluated for four years.
The program continues to develop and evaluate new perennial plants for introduction to the horticulture industry and gardeners. 2016 is proving to be an exciting year for the program, with eight new false indigo (Baptisia) hybrids and two new Phlox hybrids poised for introduction. Three more Phlox hybrids and a compact speedwell (Veronica) are being distributed this year to licensed nurseries around the country for evaluation and propagation. Be watching for these new introductions in 2017 or 2018!
