Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns, the annual fall display of expertly carved pumpkins at the Chicago Botanic Garden, has been extended an extra night due to popular demand.
This year’s event runs five nights, from Wednesday, October 24, to Sunday, October 28. The Garden will close at 5 p.m. each night and reopen at 6 p.m. for this special event. Visitors can purchase timed tickets for entry between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. Last entry is at 10 p.m.; the event ends at 10:30 p.m.
Carving artists spend up to 15 hours making each of the 80 giant jack-o’-lanterns, created out of pumpkins sometimes weighing more than 150 pounds. This year’s themes include Halloween Classics, Dia de los Muertos, Optical Illusions, Monsters in Love and Chicago Classics. The Garden will be filled with 1,000 smaller jack-o’-lanterns in different colors, adding to the spooky ambience.
There will be costumed characters and carvers creating jack-o’-lanterns throughout the grounds. Drinks and light fare will be available for purchase in the Garden View Café and in two outdoor locations near the jack-o’-lanterns. The Model Railroad Garden will be decorated for Halloween and running ghostly trains and open during the event; admission is included with event ticket.
