As part of Visitor Services, the ideal applicant has exceptional communications and customer relations skills, providing an outstanding first impression while creating a positive and memorable experience for Chicago Botanic Garden visitors. The visitor assistant and cashier provides support for Garden exhibitions and events through a welcoming greeting, timely and accurate ticket sales using computerized point-of-sales systems, and line management control. The ability to maintain professional behavior and multitask in a fast-paced environment is a must. This is a seasonal position, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through October working at least three days, including a weekend day or up to five days a week. Then in November, would transition to work the holiday Lightscape event in the evenings, through January 4, 2021.
Duties and Responsibilities: 

In this role, you will be responsible for the following: 

  • Provide accurate and efficient cashiering skills, including operating multiple computerized point-of-sales systems, generating ticket sales in multiple categories and values, coupon redemptions, and the balancing of sales figures for deposit.
  • Process and collect payments from visitors, including handling money, processing credit and debit cards, making change, and processing gift certificates.
  • Remain knowledgeable of Garden current events and exhibitions, and proactively communicate and promote these to visitors.
  • Five-star customer service oriented, able to work independently and willing to work as part of a team.
  • Promote and maintain a professional appearance and demeanor while in uniform.
  • Work outdoors in all varieties of weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Occasionally transport visitors, staff, and volunteers on a variety of vehicles (e.g. vans, club cars) throughout the Garden. Must be safety oriented.
  • Assist the visitor operations manager and coordinator in other areas, as required.

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. College degree preferred.
  • Articulate, with a strong command of the English language. Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus.
  • Available day, some evenings, weekends, and holiday hours.
  • Experience in the service and/or tour industry.
Physical Demands: 
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, listening, speaking, and keyboarding. Requirement for lifting, pushing, or pulling items less than 30 pounds. Exposure to outdoor environments and often varied weather conditions.
