Veteran Internship Program, Lenhardt Library Intern

Work under supervision in the Lenhardt Library while participating in the Veteran Internship Program to create a plan for transitioning to the civilian workforce.

Learn about, and become familiar with, the job functions in a library. The collections of the Lenhardt Library hold approximately 125,000 volumes including books, e-books, periodicals, e-journals, rare books, special collections, videos, DVDs, slides, nursery catalogs, and the archives of the Chicago Horticultural Society. You will work under supervision in the Lenhardt Library and receive individual and small group assistance to: 

  • Create a civilian job market resumé and cover letter
  • Develop a professional online presence via LinkedIn
  • Practice interview skills and professionalism 
  • Explore career choices
  • Learn how to search for employment
Duties and Responsibilities: 

In this role you will be responsible for the following: 

  • Shadowing library staff to learn library operations in public services and technical services 
  • Scanning historic magazines for digitization 
  • Moving books and magazines to ease overcrowding in the Lenhardt Library and the Lenhardt Plant Science Library 
  • Other duties as assigned 
  • Being an enthusiastic and positive contributor to the Veteran Internship cohort 
  • Completing the Veteran Internship Program curriculum 

Pay rate: $15/hour for 30 hours/week for 14 weeks. Additional $50/week travel stipend


Our ideal candidate will have the following: 

  • Veteran status.
  • Must be able to provide DD Form 214 during application process.
  • Ability to provide Veteran I.D. 
  • Must be able to work 14 weeks from May 21 through August 24.
  • Excellent computer skills. 
  • Detail-oriented with neat work habits. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Enjoys working with people and providing 5-star customer service. 
  • Ability to be flexible and willing to assist with projects as needed. 
  • Work a Monday – Friday schedule.

Physical Demands:
