Veggie Rx Program Assistant

Windy City Harvest is looking for a program assistant to oversee our North Lawndale Veggie Rx program. Veggie Rx is a produce subscription program for families receiving SNAP benefits. Windy City Harvest offers two Veggie Rx programs, one in partnership with the Lawndale Christian Health Center and one in partnership with the Partnership for Health Promotion at Loyola’s Maywood Medical Center. Each participant can receive a weekly produce box, Produce Perks (coupons to stretch their LINK dollars at Windy City Harvest markets), and a nutrition and cooking class for up to ten weeks. This program assistant works collaboratively with three partner organizations—Lawndale Christian Health Center (LCHC), Chicago Partnership for Health Promotion (CPHP), and the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Windy City Harvest program. The goal is to increase fresh produce access to low-income residents through VeggieRx Box Distributions and farm stand promotion and to provide nutrition education classes to the community. Duties and Responsibilities: 

In this role, you will be responsible for the following: 

  • Support the delivery of 900 Veggie Rx boxes to at least 100 families receiving SNAP benefits
  • Promote and distribute Produce Perks, which families can redeem at Windy City Harvest markets for up to 50 percent of their LINK purchase
  • Coordinate with Lawndale Christian Heath Center staff to schedule and refer patients to the Veggie Rx program
  • Coordinate with the Chicago Partnership for Health Promotion staff to prepare recipe cards, nutrition information, and lesson hands-outs for each distribution, creating new materials as needed
  • Train and engage Corps and Youth Farm participants during box distributions
  • Distribute, collect, and enter surveys into Excel tracking to report knowledge of food preparation, healthy eating habits, and Veggie Rx evaluation
  • Lead box pack out, delivery, and distribution with support from Windy City Harvest Aggregation team
  • Develop creative ways to increase consumption of fresh produce for all Veggie Rx participants
  • Promote weekly farm stand in North Lawndale and work with the Market team to ensure proper use and recording of Produce Perks
  • Report weekly on program development to the team
  • Act as a supportive program, job and agriculture resource to program participants, staff, community residents, media, and collaborative partners

Our ideal candidate will have the following: 

  • Two or more years of community education experience in urban communities
  • Commitment to the mission of Windy City Harvest
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
  • Understanding of federal benefit programs, particularly SNAP
  • Experience providing education about plant rich diets
  • A strong interest in working with youth development and transitional jobs
  • Experience tracking data accurately with Excel 
  • Commitment to being a supportive resource for program participants, community residents, and project partners
  • A valid driver's license with a good driving record
  • Willingness to drive large vehicles for distribution 
  • The ability to work independently to coordinate a developing program and as part of a dedicated urban agriculture training team 
  • A detail-oriented, flexible, dependable, and punctual work ethic—this position requires evening availability one day per week
  • Excellent communications skills: email, phone, in person, etc. 
Physical Demands: 
This is an urban farm setting. Staff must be able to work on feet all day in all weather conditions performing manual labor. There will be frequent lifting, standing, walking, bending, farm tool usage, machinery operation as well as speaking to public, staff, and program participants. Staff is required to lift, push, and pull items up to 50 pounds. Staff is expected to work in multiple locations.
