Science First Assistant

This position assists the manager of secondary education and career programs and the Science First Instructors with the Science First program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting the instructors to the Science First program with class and field activities, preparing for laboratory and field projects, and working with the Science First students on their daily lessons and projects. The assistant should be available to work from July 3 to August 25, 2017. Science First is a free summer science program that strives to increase students' knowledge and appreciation of the environment and how scientists study the environment. Students participate in a four-week session that takes place at the Chicago Botanic Garden Monday through Friday. A school bus provides transportation from designated stops starting as early as 7 a.m. to bring students to the Garden by 9 a.m. Students are provided with all materials they need to participate, as well as a free snack and lunch. Students leave the Garden at 3 p.m. each day.
Duties and Responsibilities: 

In this role, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Monitor the Science First/College First students on the bus ride, ensuring they behave appropriately and reporting any issue to the program manager
  • Take attendance daily
  • Organize and prepare materials for laboratory and field sessions
  • Assist instructors with supervising students during outdoor activities
  • Assist students with their research projects
  • Engage in hands-on activities with the students, under the direction of the instructors
  • Set up lunches, distribute snacks, and oversee clean up
  • Assist with logistical preparations of weekly fieldtrips
  • Assist with the integration of digital badging, documenting student work and showcasing student achievements
  • Complete a final project such as writing and presenting a lesson to students at the conclusion of the program
  • Assist the program manager and instructors with other activities as needed

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a minimum of one-year experience in an informal science education program
  • Ability to work cooperatively with instructors and other staff
  • Willingness to work outdoors
  • Willingness to participate in active, hands-on learning
  • Must be able to show initiative and take charge when needed
  • Preference is given to students who have formerly participated in the College First and/or Science First programs at the Chicago Botanic Garden
  • Experience working with diverse populations and experience working with Chicago Public Schools students is a plus
  • Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus
Physical Demands: 
Indoor and outdoor classroom setting. Frequent standing, walking, bending, listening, and speaking. Some use of office equipment. Some requirements for lifting, pushing, or pulling items less than 30 pounds.
