Overview: 
Assist the Floriculturist, Outdoor in day-to-day greenhouse and nursery operations, with a focus on growing duties. Help with plant deliveries to garden areas as needed. Position needs to be flexible to work in changing environments and with different divisions within the department. Watering will be a focus of the position and a required skill set. Manage the organization and hardening off process of the plants being grown for garden areas.
Duties and Responsibilities: 

In this role you will be responsible for the following: 

  • Assist the floriculturists in all aspects of production through watering, fertilizing, pest control, transplanting, spacing, sanitation, ordering, scheduling, and inventory.
  • Apply insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and plant growth regulators on a weekly basis if needed, as determined by the senior growers.
  • Maintain plants on scheduled weekends and holidays.
  • Assist in the delivery of plants to grounds, flower shows, plant sales and other special events.
  • Assist with Greenhouse Integrated Pest Management program and maintain inventory of chemicals used by Plant Production.
  • Generate reports from the production inventory database, do data entry and make labels through production label system.
  • Maintain a moderate level of computer literacy for the purposes of interdepartmental documentation and communication.
  • Assist with tours as needed.

Qualifications: 

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Associates degree in horticulture or equivalent, with 2 years’ experience in greenhouse operations.
  • General knowledge of small tools and equipment.
  • Basic computer knowledge required, with use of spreadsheets and inventory databases preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license and insurable by the Chicago Horticultural Society.
  • Must have or be able to obtain an Illinois operator’s license for pesticide applications.
Physical Demands: 
Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry items up to 50 pounds. Must be able to spend long periods of time standing and sometimes sitting.
