Overview:
This position assists the Manager of Science Career Continuum and College First/Science First Instructors. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting the instructors for the Science First program with virtual class activities,
preparing for e-learning, working with the Science First students on their daily lessons and projects. The Assistant should be available to work from June 27 to August 12, 2022.
Purpose:

Science First is a free summer science program that strives to increase students’ knowledge and appreciation of the environment and how scientists study the environment. Students participate in either a three-week or two-week session that take place virtually Monday through Friday. Students are provided with all materials they need to participate, including a laptop loan and WIFI hotspot to use for the duration of the summer program.
 

Duties and Responsibilities:

In this role you will be responsible for the following:
•     Take daily attendance.
•     Monitor the College First students on the bus ride on Tuesday and Thursdays, ensuring they behave appropriately and reporting any issues to the Program Manager.
•     Monitor the Science First students during group and independent learning times, ensuring they are following e-learning guidelines and expectations, reporting any issues to instructors.
•     Organize completed student assignments in Google Classroom and keep track of program calendar.
•     Assist students with their final projects.
•     Help with tech support for students.
•     Engage in hands-on virtual activities with the students, under the direction of the instructors.
•     Assist the program manager and instructors with other activities as needed.

Qualifications:

Our ideal candidate will have the following:
•     High school diploma or GED
•     Demonstrated leadership skills in a minimum of one year's experience in an informal science education program
•     Preference is given to students that have formerly participated in the College First and/or Science First programs at the Chicago Botanic Garden

Physical Demands:
Indoor and outdoor classroom setting. Frequent standing, walking, bending, listening, speaking, and keyboarding. Use of office equipment including computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, and fax machines. Some requirements for lifting, pushing, or pulling items less than 30 pounds.
