Nyree Zerega on the Osage orange and giant ground sloth
(evolution of plant and animal species)

Many plants produce fruits to entice animals to eat them so they will move their seeds around. Think colorful, juicy fruits that attract birds, which then spread their seeds far and wide. But some large fruits (like Osage orange or Kentucky coffee tree) just fall in place with no one taking any interest in them. It might not have always been like this. North America was once home to now extinct, very large animals—like horse relatives, mastodons, and ground sloths—which may have done the job. Join us to learn more about lost plant animal connections in the past, possible new ones in the future, and new connections forged.
