Sally Harwood began her carillon studies in 1996 with Margo Halsted at the newly-renovated Beaumont Tower Carillon at Michigan State University, and she studied with Ray McLellan after his 1997 appointment as Michigan State University carillonneur. Harwood has been a carillonneur member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America since 2000. She attended the Royal Carillon School ‘Jef Denyn’ in Mechelen, Belgium, studying with Eddy Marien and Erik Vandevoort, and was awarded the end carillonneur diploma “with distinction.”
Harwood occasionally performed formal recitals while still pursuing her legal career, but now, as a retiree, she plays the carillon more than ever and her performance work has expanded. Her other musical activity is playing the recorder with fellow early music enthusiasts.
