Sunset Books is well known for its practical “do-it-yourself” books. This book features well-organized text by Emily Young and a “notebook” of personal observations by Dave Egbert. Both of these authors provide an introduction to the logic and needs of small gardens. Container gardens, sun gardens, shade and water gardens are among those presented, and the combinations of plants are often unusual and imaginative. Though the concepts and designs are often bold or unusual, there is an opportunity to adapt the ideas for different planting zones and conditions. The authors have made it very clear that no one needs to be intimidated or limited by their ideas, at least in the garden! The “what to grow” section, with clear, identifiable photographs and an index, completes a useful and attractive addition to the home gardener's library.
