Keynote Speakers

PHOTO: Dr. Ashok KhoslaDr. Ashok Khosla has combined life in academia with development programs for the rural poor. He was a member of the team at Harvard that designed the first undergraduate course on the environment in the early 1960s. In 1976, he was appointed director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), where he designed and launched Inforterra, the global environmental information exchange.

In 1983, Dr. Khosla founded Development Alternatives, the first major non-governmental organization dedicated to environmentally sound development.

Dr. Khosla has served on the Boards of the Club of Rome, the World Conservation Union, and the
International Institute for Sustainable Development and as an advisor to the World Bank, UNEP, and the Indian government. He serves on UNEP’s International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management.

In 2002, Dr. Khosla was awarded UNEP’s prestigious Sasakawa Environment Prize for his work creating sustainable livelihoods that empower people subsisting below the poverty line.

PHOTO: Fred KruppFred Krupp is president of Environmental Defense Fund, a national nonprofit organization that links science, economics, and law to solve the most serious environmental problems. The group concentrates on four goals: climate, oceans, human health, and the common issues affecting land, water, and wildlife.

Krupp and the Environmental Defense Fund helped develop market-based solutions such as the acid rain reduction plan in the 1990 Clean Air Act. Krupp was a founding member of the United States Climate Action Partnership, a coalition of leading corporations and environment organizations supporting mandatory limits in the United States on global warming pollution.

The largest private equity deal ever, the purchase of TXU, was made contingent on Environmental Defense’s approval of the greenhouse gas management plan. Krupp has led the organization in a series of corporate partnerships with McDonald’s, BP, FedEx, and others.
