What is plant conservation? It’s a topic that covers a lot of ground.

With the September 2009 opening of the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Plant Conservation Science Center, there is a new home for the Garden’s many conservation efforts — a place where scientists, students, and visitors come together under one roof to work on, learn about, and gain appreciation for the most vital science of our time — conservation.

With that in mind, we’ve designed two garden walks to deliver you to the doorstep of the Plant Science Center from two different directions, while passing through the natural areas that are at the hub of the Garden’s conservation activities. Whether you begin your walk at the Visitor Center (a mixed sun/shade, .5-mile walk) or at Dixon Prairie (a full-sun, .5-mile walk), we suggest three items for your trek: comfortable shoes, a refillable water bottle, and a mindset that’s open to the ongoing, ever-changing nature of conservation.
