TITLE: Science First Lake County Seasonal Manager – FILLED


PURPOSE: The seasonal manager of the Science First Lake County program will oversee a middle-school science program at a Lake County forest preserve site (North Chicago) but will be based prior to the summer at the Chicago Botanic Garden. The position is responsible for student recruitment and program setup (February to late May for 15 to 20 hours per week) and then program logistics and daily site visits (June and July for about 40 hours per week).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

1. Recruit students for the program from designated middle schools within northern Lake County. This responsibility will involve contacting schools, making presentations at schools (must provide own transportation), and working with teachers and administrators at the school.

2. Assist with hiring of instructors for the summer program and supervise instructor’s work during the summer program.

3. Serve as primary on-site administrator for the summer science and nature program, under the direction of the coordinator of secondary education.

4. Work at both the Chicago Botanic Garden and Greenbelt Cultural Center in North Chicago.

5. Assist with other program activities as necessary.

COMPENSATION: $11 to $14 per hour

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Be available to work for 15 to 20 hours/week in February through May/early June of 2009. Hours increase to 40 hours by mid-June, and the program runs from June 22 to July 17. Must have own transportation for presentations at schools throughout Lake County.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience with middle or high-school-aged students, a background in ecology, environmental science, or education (formal or informal), and some supervisory experience. Excellent communications skills, the ability to work independently, and familiarity with essential computer technology are required.
