NRES 280 Forest and Landscape Insects
Explore the exciting minute world of the insects and mites that are found on trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawn in the home and forest landscapes. NRES 280 will be presented using color photos and film clips of the various insects and mites that are found on ornamentals and forest trees. The life histories of the insects and mites will be emphasized and illustrated through color photography. Cultural, biological, and chemical controls will be discussed. The course will be useful for those contemplating work in forestry, landscaping, the nursery industry, arboriculture, garden retail, and people just interested in the insects and mites of the home landscape.

Class times and section locations:

  • The Morton Arboretum on Thursdays 8/24-12/14 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. No class during the week of Thanksgiving Break — November 23rd.

HORT455 Residential Site Design I
In HORT 455 the student will learn to produce plan drawings that are easy to read because they include a variety of line weights, values, and textures. Both graphic presentations and site design will be worked on throughout the semester. Students will learn to use graphic skills to create drawings that have a three dimensional character. There will be an emphasis on increasing student understanding, speed and effectiveness in generating these types of drawings. Design exercises are intended to focus on specific issues such as the development and use of a design vocabulary or the development of a sequence of spaces that serve as the entry to a home. Given the educational goals of this course, the exercises will be specific and focused. This course will be taught by renowned landscape architect, Greg Pierceall, who has 30 years of experience with environmental education and landscape design in Illinois and Indiana.

HORT 301 Woody Landscape Plants I
HORT 301 is a systematic approach to the identification, ornamental characters, culture, propagation, production and use of woody ornamental deciduous trees and shrubs with special emphasis on the cultivated varieties. Students will be thoroughly introduced to indigenous woody landscape plants adapted to the temperate zone. Successful use of these plants requires an extensive knowledge of identification characters, form, texture, size, ornamental characters, culture, disease and insect problems, propagation and landscape uses. Upon completion of HORT 301, one should be capable of identifying 190 taxa and be capable of selecting and using the common and superior cultivars of these and related species (350 taxa). The course emphasizes identification skills taught in weekly outdoor labs.
