Symposia

Symposia and conferences allow you to attend a single- or multi-day program on a specific topic ranging from stone in the landscape or plant conservation issues to horticulture therapy or youth gardening.

Participants will learn from both national and international experts and have ample time to network with gardening peers or professional colleagues. Continuing education units (CEUs) from professional associations are available for most symposia and conferences.

Living the Green Life

Tuesday, May 27, 2008
1-4 p.m. (Lunch option available for Noon registration below)

Home is where the heart is, and at today's half-day symposium we're getting to the heart of the matter on green homes. We know you're busy, so we designed a program that will only take one afternoon, but will give you ideas that will last a lifetime. You'll hear from local experts who are currently changing Chicagoland into a more sustainable and environmentally friendly place. Both green-industry professionals and homeowners can benefit from this program as it introduces us to new and innovative concepts that can be applied to a current home, relayed to a client, or used for building your next residence.

Speakers include Nathan Kipnis, principal of Nathan Kipnis Architects, Inc., who is widely published and recognized as one of Chicago's premier green and sustainable architects. Nathan will show us some of the tools, supplies, and ideas that are being used to build today's new green homes. Cappy Kidd of Informed Energy Decisions will show us how he has been retrofitting existing homes and apartment buildings to be more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Grace Rappe of Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects will close the day with different landscaping ideas that can minimize your home's footprint on the earth by reducing air-conditioning loads, capturing rainwater, reducing wind erosion and more.

Come a bit early to network with your colleagues and enjoy lunch at the Garden. Bring your own lunch or register for the symposium sack lunch option.
